Acknowledgements

We are deeply honoured to have been entrusted by the Buthelezi family with the responsibility of working with this archive. Their generosity and support in sharing their family’s history with us have been invaluable and should not be taken lightly. We also wish to express our gratitude to the Bhengu family, particularly Mbali Bhengu, the daughter of the late MaBhengu, who hailed from eShowe. Mbali Bhengu gave us a historical synopsis on how her mom used to make the instruments. MaBhengu played umakhweyane and was an instrumental figure in teaching younger generations about indigenous music, from crafting the instruments from scratch to playing them. Additionally, we would like to thank LAPA, an art residency space in Johannesburg, for always keeping their doors open for us to host meetings. We extend our appreciation to the Centre for the Less Good Idea and their supportive team for their commitment to experimentation. This project would not have been possible without our collaborators, Zawadi Yamungu and Sanele Ngubane. As a collective, we have worked collaboratively, and more iterations of this work will be forthcoming. Lastly, we wish to thank Ways of Repair : Loss and Damage programme, along with the Open Society Foundations for financially supporting this work and for the guidance along the way.
